Contractor leaves customers behind
I spent a year investigating a contractor in one of the wealthiest suburbs in the state, who ultimately filed bankruptcy and left dozens of customers picking up the pieces. After I spent months trying to help one woman with her case, I began to hear from whistleblowers inside the company, who pointed me to other customers in similar situations. Many of those customers agreed to talk to me on camera, and despite the contractor's efforts to avoid the spotlight, I was able to expose what was really going on behind the scenes. After a couple questioned their home inspector's credentials, I looked into the licensed professional and found out he wasn't what he seemed to be. Over a number of months, I tracked down more customers and pieced together the inspector's lies. The state ended up following my lead and revoked the home inspector's license, ordering him to pay back customers. On the heels of more than one investigation into home renovation contractors, I decided to put together a larger investigation into the steps you can take to avoid becoming a victim. I feel this was a timely investigation, particularly as HGTV continues to make renovations and "flips" popular. As part of this piece, I honed in on a new contractor who took tens of thousands of dollars from a couple and left them high and dry. I uncovered a questionable history tied to the service's owner, stretching across multiple states.
