Untested rape kits
Despite new policies taking hold across the country that call for more universal testing of sexual assault kits, I found out Indianapolis tests less than a third of its kits every year. My investigation led me to question the accuracy of a statewide audit of kits, ultimately showing that the audit was off by thousands. I tied this story around very personal accounts of the kits and of sexual assault, in order to show viewers the impact beyond a simple number. Questionable rent to own contracts
I spent six months researching and investigating a group of companies that is buying up homes in some of the city's worst neighborhoods and tying families into rent to own contracts. This investigation began with one father who showed me the house he bought, which was gutted and unlivable, despite Indiana's law requiring landlords to provide safe environments and working utilities. As I pulled the threads of this case, I found an owner who, despite his questionable past, was receiving millions of dollars from out-of-state investors. My investigation led to a better contract for families who buy into these deals. Out of Sight AEDs Life-saving devices called AEDs are becoming a regular part of rendering aid, in addition to CPR. But are they in the places where we most need them in our community? I found places where the devices were misleading or missing. Our investigation resulted in the largest public library system in the state implementing the devices in its highly-trafficked facilities. Neurosurgeon abruptly disappears
A distraught patient contacted CBS4 Problem Solvers about her neurosurgeon, who abruptly left his practice amid accusations by patients regarding their care. I uncovered dozens of malpractice lawsuits against the doctor, who was one of the highest paid providers at a major hospital chain, and a trail of questions about why he left. I was able to convince the family of a patient who passed away to speak out about his case, along with patients who told me they lived with even more pain following surgery. |
